Matthew 19:8-9
8 Jesus replied, “Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because your hearts were hard. But it was not this way from the beginning.
9 I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery.”
If you allow yourself to feel empowered by Matthew 19 8-9 you should question your motivation behind the feeling of empowerment. If you feel like God is backing up and has given you a trump card. If you feel like God has given you his blessings for a divorce our to hold the awful deed over your spouse's head...if we feel vindicated, please go back and read the verse again. I believe this verse is about Forgiveness, choice, and Agape love.
Matthew is not speaking to the confirmed adulterer in this scripture. He is speaking to the wounded hearted. If we are to practice Christianity, if we are to love the way God calls us to love, we will love with an unwavering kind of love that forgives. To be clear… God does not condone divorce, he only allows it. We are asked to love with an Agape type love. The same type of love God has shown us.
